On behalf of the CUB team, thank you!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to a ruling by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) in December, we face a big battle in 2020 to <span class=\"removed_link\" title=\"https:\/\/secure3.convio.net\/cerf\/site\/Advocacy?cmd=display&amp;page=UserAction&amp;id=595\"><strong>secure clean, affordable energy in Illinois. (Take action!)<\/strong><\/span> Still, it&#8217;s important to review how the dedication, hard work and support of Illinois consumers paid off in 2019. We helped cut <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizensutilityboard.org\/blog\/2019\/10\/21\/nicor-hike-cut-by-27-but-still-too-high-for-cub\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Nicor Gas\u2019 record rate hike by $62 million<\/strong><\/a>. We also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizensutilityboard.org\/blog\/2019\/07\/23\/we-like-headlines-like-this-regulators-order-peoples-gas-to-repay-7-2-million-to-customers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>helped secure a $7.2 million refund package<\/strong><\/a>\u2014including $3.5 million in bill credits\u2014from Peoples Gas, which faced strong allegations of mismanagement and imprudence. In addition, ComEd and Ameren Illinois both filed rate cuts for 2020. Consumer Rights Specialist Annie Warnock made a ComEd customer happy by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizensutilityboard.org\/blog\/2019\/08\/14\/cub-helped-save-my-company-from-bankruptcy-with-82000-credit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">saving him $82,000 in a billing mix-up involving his business<\/a><\/strong>. \u201cCUB is a vital resource, you guys helped save my company from bankruptcy,\u201d he said. We also helped 96-year-old Elizabeth Davis, who was overpaying by 38-50% with two different alternative power suppliers. \u201cI don\u2019t even remember joining those people,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/chicago.cbslocal.com\/2019\/06\/04\/citizens-utility-board-alternative-electric-energy-suppliers-ripoffs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>she told a TV station<\/strong> <\/a>that reported on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizensutilityboard.org\/cub-warns-consumers-chicago-region-ripe-for-electric-rip-off-this-summer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>CUB\u2019s warning<\/strong><\/a> about rip-offs in June. As part of our 35th Anniversary Clean Bill Campaign, <strong>we staffed 569 events<\/strong> (a new record!) attended by about 20,000 people. By reviewing 880 utility bills at 78 of our popular utility bill clinics, the team saved consumers total of about $13,182 per month, or about <strong>$158,184 a year<\/strong>. We helped people sign up for energy efficiency programs and uncovered gas\/electric supplier rip-offs on customers\u2019 bills.<\/p>\n<p>Among the highlights,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizensutilityboard.org\/blog\/2019\/10\/25\/cub-helps-consumer-secure-203-refund-from-alternative-supplier-rip-off\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Lead Community Liaison Ivonne Rychwa<\/strong><\/a> helped secure a $200 refund for a victim of an alternative supplier rip-off. Also, Christina Uzzo, CUB&#8217;s environmental outreach coordinator, helped organize 65 community meetings to promote Solarize Chicagoland, a program that makes solar more accessible and affordable for consumers. The program achieved commitments to install solar on 135 properties in northern Illinois. It\u2019s one of the nation\u2019s strongest laws against alternative gas and electric supplier rip-offs, and it takes effect on January 1. This was one of the biggest consumer victories in my decade at CUB. We see far too many people who are victimized by rip-offs&#8211;state statistics show that customers with alternative electric suppliers have lost nearly $800 million since 2015. Meanwhile, our \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/energynews.us\/2019\/06\/27\/midwest\/illinois-smart-meter-data-illustrates-demographic-divides-in-electricity-use\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Cluster Analysis<\/strong><\/a>,\u201d authored by Data Scientist Ramandeep Makhija and I, reviewed smart meter data from 2.5 million electric customers.
