Efficiency is all about safety and comfort.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Set your thermostat from 76 to 78 degrees for a safe and efficient temperature. Turn the AC off when you leave home unless you have pets or people in your care who need to stay cool.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you don\u2019t have a cool place to stay, visit a cooling center or public space for a break. Special centers are available in state facilities across Illinois to help consumers stay safe in the summer or winter. Find <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www2.illinois.gov\/sites\/KeepWarm\/SitePages\/WarmingCenters.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>warming<\/b> <\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/keepcool.aem-int.illinois.gov\/cooling-centers.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>cooling<\/b><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">centers near you. Many of those are open during business hours and Tollway Oasis locations are open 24 hours a day. Also, don\u2019t be afraid to ask a family member or friend if you need refuge from the heat or cold.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Stay Cool\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sip about four to eight glasses of fluids a day. Avoid too much alcohol or caffeine, which promotes dehydration.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Add a fan to your summer defenses. Set your thermostat at a smart temperature, and then use a fan to help circulate the cool air. Run it <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">counter-clockwise, from your position looking up at it. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Remember fans cool people not rooms, so turn them off when no one\u2019s around.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Need a bit more help to stay cool? Use <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a spray bottle filled with cool water to apply a refreshing mist on your face. Soak your feet in cool water. Place ice cubes, wrapped in a wet fabric, on your \u201cpulse points,\u201d where the blood vessels are close to the skin: wrists, neck, the insides of your elbows, the tops of your feet and the inside of the ankles. Take a cold shower or bath as well.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Close your curtains or blinds to keep the heat of the sun out.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Try to keep the rooms you use most (i.e. the TV room) the coolest.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Symptoms of Heat Stroke:<\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heat exhaustion is a milder form of heat-related illness that can develop after several days of exposure to high temps and not enough hydration. Heatstroke is more serious and occurs when the body starts to lose its ability to regulate itself. The signs of a heat stroke are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An extremely high body temperature, such as 103 degrees or above<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dizziness and nausea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throbbing headache\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rapid and strong pulse<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you notice these symptoms in another person, the <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/first-aid\/first-aid-heatstroke\/basics\/art-20056655\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mayo Clinic says<\/a><\/strong> to\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">call 911 or your local emergency number and then move the person out of the heat and try to cool them immediately (sponge the person with cool water; fan the person and spray them with a cool mist; cold shower, etc.).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Outlet Safety:<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If an appliance frequently trips your electric circuit breaker, disconnect it immediately and have the outlet evaluated by a qualified electrician. Older wiring in buildings may not be able to handle the electrical demand of modern appliances and may cause electrical fires if not maintained.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Extension Cords: Keep portable appliances on extension cords to protect against power surges. Extension cords should be in good condition and kept free from heavy furniture or rugs. Plus, make sure to match three-prong extension cords with three-prong outlets. (<\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/gopaschal.com\/is-it-safe-to-cut-the-ground-prong\/#:~:text=The%20third%20prong%20on%20an,Literally.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Don\u2019t ever cut the third prong to make it fit in an outlet.<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> That third prong is a safety measure that grounds the device.)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Fire Alarm:<\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure your fire alarm is working properly. Electrical fires are a year-round threat to your home. (While you\u2019re at it, also make sure you\u2019re carbon monoxide detectors are in working order also. Carbon monoxide is less of a threat in the summer, <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www2.illinois.gov\/sites\/sfm\/About\/Divisions\/Fire-Prevention-and-Building-Safety\/Pages\/Carbon-Monoxide-Detectors.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">but it\u2019s the law<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Additional Resources\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cubhelpcenter.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CUBHelpCenter.com<\/a><\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has efficiency tips, and information on possible sources of assistance this summer.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/keepcool.illinois.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KeepCool.Illinois.gov <\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(and<\/span> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/keepwarm.illinois.gov\/state-assistance\/families-and-individuals.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Keep Warm Illinois<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) has information on cooling (and warming) centers in the state. It also has <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/keepcool.illinois.gov\/keeping-cool.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tips<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like this: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During heat emergencies, seniors are urged to contact their local area agencies on Aging or the Senior HelpLine at <\/span><strong>(800) 252-8966<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for assistance with locating senior centers, adult day service sites and other buildings that serve as cooling centers.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redcross.org\/get-help\/how-to-prepare-for-emergencies\/types-of-emergencies\/heat-wave-safety.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Red Cross: Heat Wave Safety<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.findhelp.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FindHelp.org<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can help you locate a wide range of assistance programs based on your Zip Code.
