Just one gigawatt is enough energy to power about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/eere\/articles\/how-much-power-1-gigawatt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">750,000 homes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.utilitydive.com\/news\/new-transmission-approaches-can-cut-billions-in-decarbonization-costs-mit\/593240\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MIT study found<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that interstate transmission coordination and expansion could half the costs of decarbonizing the electrical grid by 2040.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The MISO project is the first of an effort of the grid operator\u2019s Long-Range Transmission Planning (LRTP). Fellow <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cubofmichigan.org\/new_midwestern_transmission_line_buildout_could_save_billions_in_electricity_costs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">consumer advocates say<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> building out transmission is key to grid reliability while transitioning to clean energy. The renewable energy project will help make up for about 50 gigawatts of coal-fired power plants and other aging resources that are shutting down, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizensutilityboard.org\/events\/solar-power-hour-0809-kane\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">explains Aubrey Johnson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, vice president of system planning and competitive transmission at MISO. The last major transmission buildout MISO approved was its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.misoenergy.org\/planning\/planning\/multi-value-projects-mvps\/#t=10&amp;p=0&amp;s=&amp;sd=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2011 multi-value transmission initiative<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Central and Southern Illinois consumers have seen a 120 percent increase in their power prices this summer, partly because of a dip in electricity supply that sparked a huge jump in the price of capacity\u2013what consumers pay to have enough reserve power when demand is high.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, CUB joined with the <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizensutilityboard.org\/blog\/2022\/07\/22\/with-energy-prices-skyrocketing-advocates-urge-power-grid-operator-to-stop-delays-on-new-generation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Illinois Clean Jobs Coalition<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to hold a news conference urging MISO to fast-track 34 renewable energy generation projects that are awaiting approval by the grid operator. The coalition said MISO\u2019s approval of the transmission project was a step in the right direction.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cToday\u2019s action to increase grid reliability and integrate more renewable energy and battery storage in MISO North is a desperately-needed positive step, but MISO must act faster to speed the conversion from dirty, expensive fossil fuels to clean, less expensive renewables,\u201d the Illinois Clean Jobs Coalition said in a<\/span> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ilcleanjobs.org\/2022\/07\/25\/statement-of-the-illinois-clean-jobs-coalition-on-miso-approval-of-transmission-upgrades\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cThat starts with moving much more quickly to approve 34 solar and wind projects presently sitting in MISO\u2019s queue.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other power grid news, the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.utilitydive.com\/news\/ameren-illinois-icc-miso-pjm\/628029\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">called for a cost-benefit analysis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Ameren Illinois shifting from MISO to the PJM Regional Transmission Organization, or RTO.
