Unfortunately, major gas utilities in the state are pushing to raise another part of our gas bills, proposing <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizensutilityboard.org\/blog\/2023\/01\/23\/rate-hike-barrage-illinois-utilities-launch-unprecedented-campaign-to-raise-rates-by-a-combined-2-billion\/\">$887 million in rate hikes.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From April to May of this year, prices declined for all but three utilities\u2013 Liberty Utilities, MidAmerican Energy and Peoples Gas. The price range includes a 46 percent decrease for Mt Carmel customers to a 21 percent increase for Peoples Gas customers. Nicor, the state\u2019s largest utility, reported a 13 percent decrease from April to May.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gas utilities file supply prices\u2013called the Purchased Gas Adjustment (PGA)\u2013each month with the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC). Below are the supply prices for May 2023 and how they compare with last May\u2019s prices.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>May Gas Prices<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ameren Illinois<\/strong><b>\u2013<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">40.42 cents per therm (down about 43 percent from May 2022)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Consumers Gas<\/strong><b>\u2013<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">28.76 cents per therm (down about 71 percent from May 2022)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Illinois Gas<\/strong><b>\u2013<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">21.47 cents per therm (down about 78 percent from May 2022)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Liberty Utilities<\/strong><b>\u2013<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">69.18 cents per therm (down about 52 percent from May 2022)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>MidAmerican Energy<\/strong><b>\u2013<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">45.59 cents per therm (down about 52 percent from May 2022)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Mt. Carmel<\/strong><b>\u2013<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">14.12 cents per therm (down about 72 percent from May 2022)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Nicor Gas<\/strong><b>\u2013<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">39 cents per therm (down about 65 percent from May 2022)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>North Shore Gas<\/strong><b>\u2013<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">28.42 cents per therm (down about 72 percent from May 2022)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Peoples Gas<\/strong><b>\u2013<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">36.02 cents per therm (down about 64 percent from May 2022)\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Your utility is determined by where you live, so you cannot switch from one utility to another. Under Illinois law, gas utilities are not allowed to profit off supply prices\u2014they pass those costs from gas producers and marketers onto customers with no markup.
