Don\u2019t panic, CUB is here to help!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ll start with electricity! A simple way to understand your bill is, <\/span><strong>supply + delivery + taxes &amp; fees = amount due<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Supply, what you pay for the actual electricity, takes up about a half to two-thirds of your bill. Make sure your information is correct.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In section 2 you will see the <\/span><strong>issued date<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which means the date that your bill was created. This section also will include a personalized <\/span><strong>account number, due date<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (when the payment is due), and <\/span><strong>amount due<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (the amount owed to ComEd).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Section 3 shows your <\/span><strong>total usage<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over that past 13 months. Each month displays how many kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity were used. You will also see a bolded word that reads <\/span><strong>Actual<\/strong><b>. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This means the utility read your meter that month. ComEd sometimes estimates your usage for the month, but that shouldn\u2019t happen with modern meters that can be read remotely. So if it ever does say \u201cestimated,\u201d contact ComEd.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Section 4 is not as scary as it looks! The first long section demonstrates your average energy usage and temperature for that <\/span><strong>current month<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It also shows how much your usage has increased, percentage-wise, since the year before. The box on the bottom left shows <\/span><strong>last month\u2019s<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> average energy usage and temperature. The box on the right shows the average energy usage and temperature of <\/span><strong>last year<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Section 5 shows the <\/span><strong>supply<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> section, which is the cost of your electricity usage for that month. Here you will see the company that supplies your electricity\u2013either ComEd or an alternative electricity supplier. In this case the bill says \u201cComEd\u00a0 provides your energy.\u201d (<\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizensutilityboard.org\/blog\/2024\/08\/26\/cub-comed-ameren-customers-have-lost-1-8b-to-alternative-power-suppliers-since-2015-consumer-group-issues-statewide-warning-against-bad-deals\/\">Beware of bad supplier deals<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>.<\/strong> If a company other than ComEd is listed here, make sure to check what per-kWh electricity supply price you\u2019re paying and how it compares with ComEd\u2019s price, which should be listed on your bills as the \u201cPrice to Compare\u201d in the \u201cUpdates\u201d section on the back page. It\u2019s likely that ComEd will have the lower supply rate. )<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Section 6 shows the <\/span><strong>delivery<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cost, which is the cost of delivering energy to your apartment for that month. This section will always list ComEd as the company that delivers your electricity\u2013even if a different company is listed as your supplier in the Supply section of your bill.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beneath the big circle that is in the middle of your ComEd bill you will find the cost of <\/span><strong>taxes and fees<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">See that wasn\u2019t so bad! Now let\u2019s tackle the back of your electricity bill! We\u2019ve already covered section 1, so let&#8217;s move forward!<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Section 2 shows your <\/span><strong>address<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and your <\/span><strong>electric choice ID<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This is different from your account number or meter number. You would only need to use your electric choice ID if you plan on participating in Community Solar or purchase electricity supply from a different company than ComEd.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Section 3 you will see your <\/span><strong>meter information<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A meter is the device that records how much energy you are using. In this section you should focus on your <\/span><strong>meter number<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is a personalized number that is used to identify your meter, and your electricity <\/span><strong>usage<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Again, your bill should always say <\/span><strong>Actual<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><strong>charge details<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> show the start and end date of the period covered by your monthly bill.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Section 5, 6, and 7, breaks down your <\/span><strong>supply<\/strong>, <strong>delivery<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><strong>taxes &amp; fees<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in detail.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Section 8 shows you how much ComEd or an alternative supplier is charging you per kWh. In the sample bill, the price is out of date. Your bill will have the current ComEd price, or you can get it <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/plugin.illinois.gov\/understanding-the-price-to-compare\/price-to-compare-comed.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">at this state of Illinois website<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A therm is a unit of heat energy. One therm is roughly the amount of gas needed to run a typical residential furnace for one hour. Your gas meter measures the volume of gas in cubic feet, which is converted to therms on your bill.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have an alternative gas supplier, the company\u2019s information will appear below the <\/span><strong>messages<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> section. If there is no company in that section, then your supplier is Peoples Gas. As with electricity, there are a lot of bad deals being peddled by alternative gas suppliers. Beware: It\u2019s likely that the gas utility\u2013Peoples Gas\u2013is your best bet for supply.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similar to your electric bill, your gas bill can be boiled down to a simple equation \u2013 \u201c<\/span><strong>supply<\/strong><b> + <\/b><strong>delivery <\/strong><b>+ <\/b><strong>taxes &amp; fees<\/strong><b> = <\/b><strong>amount due<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 with supply a half to two-thirds of your bill and delivery one-third to a half.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Let&#8217;s get started!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Section 1 is where we find Peoples Gas contact and emergency numbers<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In section 2 we see the <\/span><strong>bill date<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is when the bill became available online, <\/span><strong>your account number, next meter read date, amount due<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>,<\/strong> and the <\/span><strong>due date<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Section 3 shows your <\/span><strong>name<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><strong>address<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Section\u00a0 4 displays the <\/span><strong>account summary<\/strong><b>,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> including<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0the billing period, average therms used per day, and the price of gas (a.k.a. purchased gas adjustment) for the current month, previous month, and the same month a year back. Followed by graphs that show your monthly usage and your monthly cost over the past 13 months.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Section 5 shows your <\/span><strong>previous balance<\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(last month\u2019s bill) and your <\/span><strong>current balance<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here we can see the details of the <\/span><strong>gas service<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you will see your meter ID, total gas usage, below that you will see the breakdown of <\/span><strong>delivery<\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">charges and <\/span><strong>taxes<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as well as your <\/span><strong>gas service total<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the bottom. Remember, Peoples Gas owns all the pipes, so you will always pay that company to deliver the heating fuel to you, even if you choose another company as your gas supplier.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sections\u00a0 7, 8, and 9 showcase the check you can mail to Peoples Gas, you can now make payments online and can enroll in automatic payments.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Gas utilities should read a customer\u2019s meter at least once every other month. In the months your gas utility doesn\u2019t visit your home, it will estimate your usage based on last year\u2019s usage for the same month, adjusted for weather. Check your bill to make sure your usage is not being estimated more than two months in a row. If it is, call the utility and find out why.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The back provides definitions of terms that are on your bill as well as financial assistance, payment and safety information.
